Reflections on Geography Trip-
By yours truly- Jonathan Martin
As I sit back and reflect on the field trip this afternoon to USS South South Dakota, If find that it was a very informative trip and a learning experience! Having no prior knowledge about the USS South Dakota, I find that I found the trip very informative! I liked the models of the battleship, the history, the background, and the on hands kind of replica things on the outside! If I were to ask a question it would concern about if all states had a battleship named in honor of them or just a select few? I think anybody who wants to be more informed on the issues of WWII and battleships should visit this historical monument! This monument has the start to the war and also the finish! The lady's that volunteer give much time to educate others about South Dakota's battleship history. I also learned that a new USS South Dakota, submarine, will be commissioned!
The reflecting of the EROS, Earth Resources Observation System, field trip was a very deep process. We started out the day there with the security check and the fun "airport" treatment, if you know what I mean. With getting to watch a video produced from 2007 it wasn't keeping me on the edge of my chair, by any means. It was very informative and really in depth about the start of the EROS. Just a few things I remember are, that the observation station could of been located at any 1 of 6 states. Also, the land it sits on was purchased for $1, the going rate of government purchases or offers they couldn't refuse. I hope that loan was able to be paid off and not waste too many tax payers dollars, well anyways. I wish the presentation would of been a little more hands on, so to speak. It was refereed to as something boring by many. However, I found that the maps and stuff are interesting, science is a wonderful thing but it has to be something very specific to interest many! Somebody who would wish to work at EROS, would most likely need a scientific course(s) and a Engineering degree. People who are very intrigued by the world of science, this my friends would be a great place to visit!
